Will accountants and auditors be remote forever?

Can you visualize a future where the back office is now all the way back - like never back in the office back. I know many companies already have their back offices in cheaper locations - the pandemic will likely accelerate this narrative, and  make it more acceptable. If I'm the front office and I'm looking to cut costs, this is all too easy. Accountants are generally more likely to want to work from home and will love that work-life balance, moving up in the chain up to a certain point. I'd bet that it's something many will ask for once the crisis dissipates.

What does that  mean? Accountants will be relegated to Zoom discussions with the front office, who will be in their fancy offices in the suburbs or the city. All the work will be done and saved in the cloud - we'll continue to execute on controls and pump out financials. I mean - what is the argument against this?

The only argument I can see is Company Culture - but I mean, how truly important is this for Accounting? I would argue that it isn't - if you have a set of deadlines and you adhere to those deadlines, you continue to churn like a machine. I do this limiting growth for the accountants though - those natural conversations in the office that can turn into projects, the brainstorming, the impulsive inclination to volunteer for interesting work - will all give way to virtual ceilings.
It's a terrifying thought - but this would be a  perfect sweet spot for your typical accounting middle class family that's happy in the suburbs. But what about the youngsters, the auditors...

Culture is super important when you are grinding out work - and young people out of college can't be isolated in their homes with their parents. They need to be around like-minded people, spending hours in conference rooms together absorbing company culture.....or do they? I mean, many of my friends out of college were people from work - if that dissipates, it's just our friends from college or friends we meet at networking events.

Could audit  work be done remotely? I guess the answer is yes. A lot of  audit work is already outsourced, and if all that remains that can't be outsourced is the knowledge base, Companies don't need the auditors to be around - Zoom calls will suffice. And since the Big 4 are heavily invested in technology and most if not all the work is done in the cloud anyway - it's all leading there.

Thinking back to my audit days --- once I got past a learning curve, I could have done a lot of that work remotely. But that learning  curve is a critical one to get over. Then again, I don't see why Zoom calls and shared screens won't suffice for the learning curve. I just don't see going remote immediately as attractive jobs for college grads.

Ultimately - yes, we can easily go remote forever. I just hope it doesn't - I don't think human beings are wired to be remote.

Side effects of cancer treatment - Uncancer

There are several side effects cancer treatments and cancer can cause. When treatment affects healthy tissues or organs, side effects are unavoidable. These can be different for each person and for different medicines and kinds of treatment. Long-term side effects are rare in modern chemotherapy. Following are common side effects of cancer treatment:

Nausea Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are very common side effects that can be caused by chemotherapy. They go away slowly during the recovery phase of the chemo cycle or after the end of treatment. Presumably, doctors prescribe medications to manage nausea and vomiting so this can be controlled.

Fatigue

Fatigue is another common side effect of chemotherapy. Some people notice that they feel a little more tired than usual during this post-chemo cycle. This fatigue goes away over time after treatment is finished.

Mental Health

Chemotherapy can affect mental health as some people may have a mild decline in the ability to think, learn, reason, and remember after chemotherapy. This condition is often called the chemo brain. It can take a few years to return to normal.

Hair loss

Chemotherapy can cause serious damage to hair follicles. It causes the hair to weaken, become brittle, and fall out. Even any hair that regrows after that may be of a different texture or color. This condition continues until the cancer treatment ends, after which hair almost always regrows.

Neuropathy

A nerve pain caused by damaged nerves is known as neuropathy. It causes tingling, numbness, and an unusual burning sensation to the hands and feet. Some people also experience weakness and pain during daily activities.

Mouth sores

After having a chemotherapy cycle, some people develop painful oral sore for 1-2 weeks. The sores may bleed or become infected and the soreness can vary in severity. Some people can try using non-abrasive toothpaste or numbing gel or rinse their mouth with warm saltwater.

Constipation and diarrhea

Cancer treatment like chemotherapy can trigger a bowel movement which causes constipation and diarrhea. Some people avoid foods that irritate the stomach. The diet includes fiber supplements and stool softener food which can make digestion smooth.

These are the common side effects of cancer treatment. If these side effects get worse then we suggest that you should rush to your doctor immediately.

ADP/Payroll

Just realized that the very payroll/adp reports we all enjoyed looking at in order to see how much our client contacts made, now seem to piss me off. Especially when your main contact, who couldn't tell a debit from a credit, makes significantly more than you, and leaves at 5. It's almost guaranteed to get you in a foul mood and yak with your team about the ridiculous salaries that certain employees get when compared to yours.

should you choose to audit financial services?

I'm trying to decide whether to audit financial services companies or non-financial services companies. What would you say are the pros and cons of either industries? Do individuals who choose non-FS have less career mobility within the firm or if they decide not to stay with the B4 after a few years? Really depends on what you'd like to do after (unless you really love auditing). If you want to a controller, etc. at a p/e firm or a hedge fund down the road, you'd want to go into financial services. The pay won't be too bad, especially if you get a share of the insane bonuses they dole out. If you want to audit industries with tangible products and want to get a better understanding of the operations of such businesses, then other industries are the way to go.In terms of mobility outside the firm, auditing other industries is the way to go since you have plenty of options when you exit the audit world. For example, in 2008, after Lehman collapsed, it was incredibly hard

auditing vs consulting

I was wondering if you could break down the career opportunities in auditing and consulting (in a big 4). I know that consulting pays more in a big 4 and has more interesting work, but it seems that auditing has extremely good exit opportunities (Financial controller, CFO etc). Any thoughts on which is better in the long run? Well there's different consulting services offered by public accounting companies - the most popular being IT consulting and risk consulting. There are also other consulting services offered, but these two hire the most. Do they pay more? Yes, but not by much. Not enough for you to say: Shoot, the $$ is a huge reason for me to move over. Is the work more interesting than audit? Yes. You're actually looking over a company's processes and telling them what to do instead of what not to do (audit). Everyone I know who's made the switch likes it waay better than audit. In the long run though, choosing audit vs consulting really depends on what you want
